    Summary

The Mott Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that are working to strengthen their hometown of Flint and communities around the world.

The Foundation hopes that its collective work in any program area will lead toward systemic change. The Foundation believes long-term funding offers grantees stability, which allows them to focus on important work and pursue innovation. They fund the core activities of their grantees, rather than requiring them to shape projects around shifting priorities. The Mott Foundation believes their grantees are experts in their fields, and well-equipped to make the critical decisions that guide their work.

    1. Civil Society: Local communities are where people most directly relate to the social, economic and political processes taking place in their countries, and where they can be most active in shaping them. That's why the Foundation's Civil Society grantmaking focuses on building vibrant communities where all people can engage in decision-making that affects their day-to-day lives. The Mott Foundation works with grantees to strengthen the space for civic engagement, enhance local philanthropy and increase access to justice so all communities can address challenges and seize opportunities that lie ahead. Civil Society program priorities include:
      1. Strengthening Civic Space
      2. Enhancing Community Philanthropy
      3. Increasing Access to Justice
    2. Environment: For more than three decades, the Mott Foundation's Environment program has supported stewardship of the world's natural resources. This work has taught them that such grantmaking must seek practical ways to simultaneously build strong economic, environmental and social conditions for all people — in a word, sustainability. The Foundations environmental priorities include:
      1. Addressing the Freshwater Challenge
      2. Transforming Development Finance
      3. Advancing Climate Change Solutions
    3. Flint Area: For more than 95 years, Mott has helped people and organizations work together to support and strengthen the community they call home”. That deep and lasting commitment has perhaps never been more important than now as they continue to help Flint recover and rise from its water crisis. To those ends, their local grantmaking is helping their hometown respond to its immediate needs, reinvigorate and build upon the very real progress that was underway before the crisis occurred, and position itself to meet the tough challenges — and embrace the promising opportunities — that lie ahead. Flint area priorities include
      1. Revitalizing the Education Continuum
      2. Meeting Evolving Community Needs
      3. Restoring Community Vitality
      4. Enriching Lives Through Arts and Culture
    4. Education: The Mott Foundation makes grants to help all children, especially those in underserved communities, develop the knowledge, skills and behaviors they need to succeed in college, career pathways and life. The Education program's priorities include:
      1. Youth Engagement
      2. Graduating High School: College and Career Ready
      3. Advancing Afterschool Programs
      4. New strategies and special initiaitives
