    Summary

    The Community Foundation of South Alabama (CFSA) assembles and directs philanthropic assets to make Southwest Alabama a better place. CFSA is committed to helping southwest Alabama become an inclusive and economically thriving region that is healthy and safe for all. CFSA will continue to target its resources towards addressing identified pressing community issues and will accept proposals in the following three categories:
    • Arts and Culture Priority Area – Studies show that one of the most consistent ways to break down cultural barriers and build community is through the promotion of and engagement in the arts. Participation in the arts allows people from various backgrounds to gain greater cultural awareness and enrichment that creates a space for meaningful collaboration and fosters inclusiveness, both of which are vital elements for creating a vibrant healthy South Alabama. The Foundation will support projects and programs that:
      • Increase exposure to the arts, particularly in low-income and/or rural communities;
      • Increase cultural awareness and understanding; and,
      • Utilize arts programming as a civic engagement tool, an educational tool and/or a rehabilitation or therapeutic tool.
    • Health and Wellness Priority Area – Six of the eight counties in the South Alabama region lack immediate access to full-service healthcare facilities and for many families and individuals in the region health insurance remains cost-prohibitive. The Foundation will work with community stakeholders and organizations to increase access to quality healthcare in the region by supporting projects and programs that:
      • Increase awareness of and encourage collective advocacy to remove systemic barriers to quality healthcare;
      • Encourage development and implementation of unique community-led prevention efforts; &,
      • Develop new or expand existing community healthcare infrastructure in the region.
    • Economic Opportunity Priority Area – Many individuals and families in CFSA’s service area face significant financial struggles, and a large segment of the population the Foundation serves is being left behind economically. In an effort to change the factors that affect the economic opportunity in our region, the Foundation will work with community stakeholders and organizations to support programs and projects that:
      • Improve family economic stability and upward mobility;
      • Increase workforce readiness and job attainment; and,
      • Increase educational attainment and financial literacy among working-age adults.
